The Pittsburgh Opera announced that White Oak Choclatiers, Dorothy’s Candies, are its exclusive choclatiers for the 2004-2005 opera season.

On opening night, 2,500 opera-goers were each feted with a foil-wrapped mint melt-away, made at the Dorothy’s chocolate factory near McKeesport. The treats were our way of expressing our gratitude to the many patrons who helped us in our summer effort to gain matching funds for new and enhanced donations, said Cally Jamis Vennare, Director of Institutional Giving. “The chocolates were a BIG HIT! Everyone commented on how delicious they were.”

Dorothy’s Chocolates is featured in the Galaxy Lounge at all opera presentations, including the next opera, Puccinia’s voluptuous Tosca, which runs April 1, 4,7 and 9.

“I didn’t realize we had so many chocolate lovers at the opera!” said Mark J. Weinstein, General Director. “But having Dorothy’s as our choclatier makes for a natural partnership. After all, we now know that chocolate is good for the heart, and opera has always been good for the soul.”

As part of the partnership, Dorothy’s Candies is hard at work developing a new confection designed expressly for the opera. “To sweeten the renewal campaign, Dorothy’s will provide the new confections to each donor,” Weinstein said. “We can hardly wait!”

Dorothy’s Candies has been making premium hand-dipped chocolate since 1947. Proprietors Robert and Martella Gastel have long been opera enthusiasts. “We are thrilled to be part of the opera family,” Robert said. “We are delighted to hear that our chocolates are so well received. Our experience is that chocolate lovers are passionate about fine chocolate and Opera is an art form that people are passionate about as well.”
